How ErgoTax handles your data
A plain-English explanation of what stays local, what limited data ErgoTax receives, and how crash reports are handled.
What stays on your device
During normal preparation, the following data stays on your device and is not sent to ErgoTax servers:
- Tax documents you upload (PDFs and similar files)
- Extracted field values parsed from those documents
- Values you enter or correct manually
- Your in-progress tax return project
- Generated tax forms
- Exported project files
All document processing, calculation, and form generation happens locally in your browser using a WebAssembly module. No server round-trip is needed or used for these steps.
Limited operational data
ErgoTax does not operate without infrastructure. When you load the app or interact with ErgoTax servers, standard server logs may record:
- Your IP address
- Request timestamps
- Browser type and version (user-agent string)
- Pages or resources requested
This data is standard web server log output. It is retained for operational security and debugging purposes. ErgoTax does not sell or broker this data.
We do not claim to collect zero data. The accurate description is: standard web infrastructure creates limited operational data, and ErgoTax does not collect, store, or transmit your tax document content, return data, or form output during normal preparation.
Crash reports
ErgoTax uses crash reporting to improve stability. If the app encounters an unhandled error, a report may be sent. Crash reports are scrubbed before transmission to remove personal information, tax field values, and document content.
Crash reports are intended to contain: error type, stack trace, app version, and platform. They are scrubbed to avoid including your name, tax data, document content, or identifiable return information.
The crash reporting vendor and exact scrubber design will be documented in a future transparency update.
No OCR, no AI, no third-party extraction
ErgoTax does not use OCR services. It does not send documents to AI processing services. It does not use third-party data extraction vendors during normal preparation. Document parsing runs locally in the browser.
Local storage and data loss risk
Your tax project is saved in your browser's local storage. This means:
- If you clear your browser's site data, your project may be deleted
- Incognito or private browsing mode may not persist local storage across sessions
- Different browsers on the same computer do not share local storage
- Using ErgoTax on a different device will not show your project unless you import a project file
Always export your project file or generated forms before clearing browser data.
No accounts in v1
ErgoTax does not have an account system in v1. No credentials, email addresses, or user profile data are collected.
Future changes
E-file, when available in a future version, will require transmitting filing data to the IRS and relevant state agencies. That transmission is necessary for filing. The privacy notice will be updated before e-file is enabled.
If accounts are introduced in a future version, the privacy notice will be updated to describe what account data is collected and how it is used.
