Privacy Notice
Effective date: September 27, 2026 · Version 0.6
This Privacy Notice explains how TakoTax handles information during browser-local preparation, product support, and operation of its websites and app.
Who we are
TakoTax is operated by TakoTax LLC, a Washington limited liability company ("TakoTax," "we," "us," or "our"). For privacy questions or requests about information we hold, contact privacy@tako.tax; a mailing address for formal legal notices is available on request.
1. Browser-local preparation
During normal preparation, tax documents, extracted values, manually entered return data, saved projects, and generated forms are processed and stored locally on your device. These materials are not sent to TakoTax servers as part of normal preparation. Information you choose to send in a support request is handled separately, as described below.
You can download generated forms. Project-file export and import are not available yet. Browser cleanup, site-data deletion, private browsing, or loss of browser storage can erase your saved project; TakoTax cannot recover that local project.
2. Support information you choose to send
If you use the secured in-app support form, TakoTax receives the subject, message, and category you submit. Your message may contain sensitive personal or tax return information. The support service also records a ticket identifier, an account or session identifier, the ticket status, timestamps, and records used to prevent duplicate requests and abuse.
Support requests are sent to TakoTax’s service hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). We use this information to handle the request, troubleshoot the product, maintain support records, and protect the service against abuse. Send only information needed for your request; avoid unnecessary Social Security numbers, bank details, or other sensitive information.
If you contact us by email, we and the third-party services that route and deliver our email receive your email address, message, and any attachments you send. Messages may be forwarded between those services. Use the secured in-app form for sensitive support information; do not send tax documents, Social Security numbers, or bank details through ordinary email.
3. Operational information
Standard web infrastructure and product diagnostics may create records such as IP addresses, timestamps, browser user-agents, requested resources, product versions, browser and operating-system families, capability signals, error categories, diagnostic codes, and performance measurements. Policy acceptance or consent records may also be created where applicable.
We use operational information to operate, secure, and debug the service, understand reliability and feature usage, and maintain legal records. Operational telemetry is not intended to collect tax document contents or return values.
4. Cookies and local storage
TakoTax uses browser local storage for saved projects and may use essential cookies and similar technologies to operate and secure the site and app. Clearing TakoTax site data removes locally stored information; this does not delete a support request already sent to us. TakoTax does not use advertising pixels in the preparation flow.
5. Retention and deletion
Tax documents and return contents processed only on your device are not retained on our servers. You control downloaded files and local browser storage. Deleting a project does not delete copies you downloaded or shared.
Support tickets and associated duplicate-request records are configured to expire approximately three years after submission. Expiration schedules automatic deletion; it is not a guarantee of immediate deletion at that time. Backup and recovery copies may remain after deletion from the active system until those copies expire under their separate retention schedules.
Operational and email records may be retained for security, reliability, support, and legal recordkeeping, with periods that depend on the record and the reason for retaining it. Contact privacy@tako.tax to request deletion of information we hold. We may need to verify the request and retain information where applicable law permits or requires it.
6. Crash reports
TakoTax does not currently enable automatic third-party crash reporting. You may choose to report a problem through support. We will update this notice before enabling a crash-reporting vendor to describe the provider and information sent.
7. Service providers and disclosures
TakoTax uses service providers for hosting, domain services, email delivery, security, and related infrastructure. AWS hosts the preparation app and secured support service. Providers may process information needed to perform their services, including support information on AWS, operational request data, and messages sent through email services.
The marketing site (www.tako.tax) uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to measure page views and performance. Cloudflare receives information such as the page URL, referrer, browser user-agent, screen size, and IP address. The analytics service is designed to operate without cookies or browser fingerprinting. Its beacon does not run on the preparation app (app.tako.tax).
We may disclose information where required by law or valid legal process, and where otherwise permitted by applicable law to protect the service and address fraud or security incidents. Tax return information is subject to additional confidentiality restrictions; this notice does not replace a separate consent where one is legally required.
TakoTax does not sell tax return information or share it with advertising platforms. Built-in e-file is unavailable; we will publish updated handling details before any future filing service launches.
8. Security
We use HTTPS for the app and secured support requests. Server-side support storage is configured with encryption at rest. These measures reduce risk but do not eliminate it. Keep your device and browser secure, especially when storing or downloading tax information.
If a security incident requires notice, we will notify affected people and authorities as required by applicable law.
9. Privacy requests and state-specific rights
Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information we hold, and to opt out of certain uses or disclosures. These rights can apply to current support and operational records; they do not depend on e-file availability. We cannot retrieve information that exists only in your browser.
To the extent the California Consumer Privacy Act / California Privacy Rights Act applies, California residents may request information about collection and disclosure, access, deletion, and correction, and may opt out of sale or sharing as defined by that law. Where the Colorado Privacy Act applies, Colorado residents may request access, correction, deletion, and portability, and opt out of sale, targeted advertising, or qualifying profiling. Residents of other states may have similar rights.
Information obtained in connection with tax return preparation may also be protected by Internal Revenue Code Section 7216 and California Business and Professions Code Section 17530.5, where applicable. We will seek separate consent when required for a proposed use or disclosure; accepting this notice does not provide that consent.
Send requests or questions to privacy@tako.tax. We may ask for information needed to verify your identity and authority to make the request. Available rights and exceptions depend on applicable law; we will not discriminate against you for exercising protected privacy rights.
10. Children
TakoTax is not directed to children under 13. An adult taxpayer may enter information about dependents while preparing a return; we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 for their own use.
11. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice as the Service or its information practices change. We will post the updated notice with a revised effective date and provide any additional notice required by applicable law.
